Don’t Let April Showers get you Down | How to Fix your Clogged Shower Drain
What are some methods you can try to use to fix your clogged shower drain?
April showers bring… A clogged shower drain? When it comes to taking a shower, nothing is worse than having a clogged drain that causes the water to pool around your feet. Clogged shower drains are typically caused by a backup of soap scum and hair that has been gathering over time. The soap typically merges with the hair buildup to create impermeable clogs; in turn, creating backed up water in your Western New York shower. As we have reviewed before, for most at home plumbing problems, you should avoid at home drain cleaner, and look for other ways to fix your clogged shower drain.
Things to Try to Fix your Clogged Shower Drain
Unclogging your shower drain may be a main priority for you and you may want to try some low risk methods to fix your clogged shower drain, as soon as possible. Keep in mind, all clogs are not the same and you may be faced with one that you cannot fix on your own. If you are facing an unbeatable clog, contact a local plumber to unclog your shower drain, so you can be back to singing in the “rain” in no time.
Below are a few methods you can try to use to fix your clogged shower drain:
Use a Clothes Hanger: Metal clothes hangers are the perfect alternatives to drain snakes, if the clog you are trying to reach is not very deep. To determine how deep the clog is, you will need to remove your drain cover and shine a light down the drain to see if you can see the clog. If you can’t see the clog, this method will likely not work for you; however, if the clog is near the surface, this approach may be the right.
Step One: Straighten out the metal hanger and keep a small hook on one end.
Step Two: Unscrew and remove shower drain cover.
Step Three: Feed the hanger down the drain to try to grab the clumps of blockage (hair, soap scum, etc.).
Step Four: Run hot water down the drain and replace the drain cover.
Get to Plunging: A plunger is a good plumbing tool to use for many clogs around your Western New York home, including a clogged shower drain. Plungers force clogs and blockages downward and out of drains and could help you fix your clogged shower.
Step One: Align the plunger cup with the drain opening.
Step Two: Fill the shower basin or tub with water to cover the plunger’s lipped rim.
Step Three: Quickly move the plunger up and down for a few minutes to create suction and push the clog through the drain.
Step Four: Rinse the drain with hot water.
Pour Boiling Water Down the Drain: Boiling water is probably the easiest method you can use to try to fix your clogged shower drain. You should only try this technique if you have metal pipes. Boiling water could loosen the joints and the sealer of PVC pipes. Boiling water works by breaking up some of the buildup in the pipes, ultimately clearing the clog.
Step One: Boil the water.
Step Two: Pour the water down the drain a little at a time. This will give it the chance to work its way through the plumbing.
Embrace Science with Baking Soda and Vinegar: You can embrace the old Science experiment days and use the chemical reaction from baking soda mixed with vinegar to help unclog the drain. This should only be tried if you have metal pipes to avoid damage to PVC plumbing.
Step One: Gather baking soda, vinegar, and boil water.
Step Two: Pour the boiling water down the clogged drain.
Step Three: Add 1 cup baking soda followed by 1 cup vinegar down the drain (this should start to fizz).
Step Four: Leave the mixture in your drain for at least 15 minutes and up to an hour.
Step Five: Trickle warm water down the drain to push the mixture through the pipes.
